VIP,
December 1997
Paul A.Brown, MD
H.E.A.R. is pleased to honor Dr. Paul Brown, a noted leader in the hearing
health industry, as our VIP of the Month.
Dr. Brown is a graduate of Harvard College and Tufts University School of
Medicine. Following an internship in Pathology at the Tufts New England
Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts, he completed a four year residency
training program in Pathology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, New
York, New York. At the present time, Dr. Brown is an emeritus member of
the Board of Trustees at the Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts, past
Chairman of the Board of Overseers at the Tufts University School of Medicine,
Boston, Massachusetts, a member of the Visiting Committee at Boston University
School of Medicine and a part-time faculty member at Columbia University
College of Physicians and Surgeons.
Following completion of his training, Dr. Brown served as Chief of Pathology
at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He was one of the
founding members and past President of the American Clinical Laboratory
Association, and for two years served as a member of the National Committee
of Clinical Laboratory Services.
While a resident in Pathology at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, Dr. Brown
started MetPath (a clinical laboratory) with $500 in a two-room apartment
in Manhattan. The company developed into the largest clinical laboratory
in the world, listed on the American Stock Exchange, prior to being sold
to Corning in 1982 for $140 million. At the time of the sale, MetPath had
over 3000 employees providing clinical laboratory services with facilities
in the United States, England and Switzerland.
Dr. Brown is the Founder and Chairman of the Board of HEARx Ltd. a public
company trading on the American Stock Exchange (symbol:EAR) with over seventy
company-owned centers in five states providing services to the hearing impaired.
Dr. Brown's book "Success In The Business Jungle" (Secrets of
an Entrepreneurial Animal) is scheduled for publication early in 1998.
Dr. Brown is a mover and a shaker in the promotion of hearing issues. Most
recently, Dr. Brown and HEARx were instrumental in persuading the Florida
Health Choice Insurance Company and others to offer for the first time insurance
covering hearing aids for the hearing impaired members of their managed
care program who are under the age of 65. This is
a major step in helping our nation fight the ravaging effects of hearing
loss on peoples lives.
Dr. Brown is also the inventor of the "HEARING ALARM.ä A common cause
of hearing loss is exposure to loud noise. The "HEARING ALARM"
is designed to identify noise levels in your environment that may damage
your hearing. Hearing loss is a permanent disability that often goes unrecognized.
Continued exposure to loud noise can create communication problems that
may have serious effects on your daily life, social activities and potential
personal achievements.
Dr. Brown had the opportunity to test the "HEARING ALARM" at a
recent Paul Mc Cartney concert. The red light on the "HEARING ALARM"
indicated that the audience of over 45,000 fans were being exposed to noise
levels well within the range where hearing damage occurs within minutes.
Dr. Brown also tested the device at a performance by the Boston Symphony,
though not as damaging as the rock concert, the orange light went off on
the "HEARING ALARM" indicating the need for hearing protection
within hours to avoid hearing damges.
The "HEARING ALARM" device can greatly benefit people in the music
industry, music fans, schools, industry, and others wishing to be alerted
to the need to wear hearing protection, or when to avoid a noise hazardous
area. The device will retail for under $15 and be available soon to the
public.
H.E.A.R. salutes Dr. Brown and his efforts. We agree with his motto. Protect
your hearing from loud noise! Be careful today so you may hear tomorrow!
