Elliott H. Berger, M.S., INCE, Board Certified
Elliott received his B.S. from
Renssalear Polytechnic Institute and his M.S. in Acoustical Engineering
from North Carolina State University. He is the Senior Scientist, Auditory
Research for Aearo Company, where he
developed, and currently manages, the E-A-RCAL(sm) Acoustical Laboratory,
the heart of which is a 113 cubic meter fully-instrumented semi-reverberant
chamber. The E-A-RCAL facility is one of only three hearing-protector
testing laboratories accredited under the Department of Commerce's National
Voluntary Laboratory Certification Program (NVLAP). At Aearo Company,
Elliott is involved in product development and customer interface and
education. He recently embarked upon developing a series of audio demonstrations
cassettes, the second of which is in production at this time.
For over a twenty years Elliott has been intensively involved in hearing-protector
related research and development. He has authored over 50 journal and
magazine articles, hearing-protection chapters in eight text books, and
the on-going EARLog Series. He coordinated and served as principal editor
for the 4th edition of the American Industrial Hygiene Association's Noise
& Hearing Conservation Manual. Elliott is a frequent speaker at conferences,
symposia, and workshops, having presented over 125 lectures in the U.
S., Canada, and Mexico, as well as Europe, New Zealand, and Australia.
In 1986 Elliott was invited to be an expert panelist and the Noise Workshop
rapporteur at the NIOSH sponsored
(National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health), National Symposium
on the Prevention of Leading Work-Related Diseases and Injuries. In 1990
he was invited as an expert in the field of hearing protection and hearing
conservation to speak at the NIH
(National Institute of Health) Consensus Development Conference on Noise
and Hearing Loss. Most recently (1991) he was asked to chair a working
group on "Consumer Noise Sources and Hearing Protection," as
part of a jointly-sponsored scientific conference entitled Combatting
Noise in the '9Os: A National Strategy for the United States.
Elliott is the chair of the Acoustical Society's working group S12/WG11
Hearing Protector Attenuation and Performance which just completed developing
an improved standard for a realistic rating of hearing protector attenuation
(ANSI S12.6-1997). He is also involved with numerous other U. S., Canadian,
and international technical and standardization committees. He is a fellow
of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), Board Member of the Council for Accreditation
in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC),
Chair of the U. S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for ISO TC94/SC12 (Hearing
Protectors), Past President of the National Hearing Conservation Association,
Past Chair of the Noise Committee of the American Industrial Hygiene Association
(AIHA), and a member of many other professional
organizations including the American Speech Language Hearing Association
(ASHA), the Institute of Noise Control
Engineering (INCE),
and the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration (IIAV).
