Artist of the Month, January 1998
Katharine Chase
H.E.A.R. is thrilled to honor Katharine Chase as our Artists of the
Month. It has been a pleasure to know Katharine's music for many years
and to see her evolve as a gifted player on the San Francisco Music Scene.
In other words... KATHARINE ROCKS!!!
The San Francisco-based Katharine Chase Band is an American rock band
with a Texas twist. Rootsy and cool with iron-strong vocals, a slew of
great songs, and a high-energy live show to boot, they're easily one of
the best bands of the new crop of home grown rockers from the Bay Area.
"Katharine Chase is a force to be reckoned with. With a towering
stage presence, a piercing gaze and an acoustic guitar, her every action
commands attention. Featuring a sound steeped in folk, country and blues,
she comes off as a Nanci Griffith with an axe to grind, a Joni Mitchell
who won't be toyed with. So as her self-named band played to a packed
house at the Paradise Lounge, it was clear that she has an eye on the
big time. The Katharine Chase Band has the chops to do it. As a foursome,
they're tight, talented, pedigreed too....With Ricc Sandoval handling
the bluesy guitar fills and Kevin Allen manning the drum kit, their sound
is versatile and sharp. " - Soundcheck Magazine, San Francisco
Their latest independent release is their third - "The Truth"
- produced by Jeffrey Wood (Penelope Houston, Luka Bloom) and is distributed
through Passport/DCC to all Tower & Virgin Megastores across the country.
And with two previous independent releases under their belts, they've
already gained significant national college radio airplay as well as performed
with such notable national acts as Hootie & The Blowfish, Amanda Marshall,
Emmett Swimming, Elliott Smith, Tenderloin, Mary Lou Lord, Tripping Daisy,
Southern Culture on the Skids and locally with other up-and-coming San
Francisco bands like Cake, Train, The Dangs and Lilyvolt.
The Oakland Tribune describes the band this way:
"While predictions are a dangerous thing in the music business,
you don't have to go too far out on a limb to figure on Katharine Chase
being the next big star to emerge from the Bay Area. After establishing
herself as a major presence on the local club scene, Chase has started
to create a national buzz in the past year with performances at key
music industry confabs and opening-act slots for the likes of Hootie
& the Blowfish. ...To her credit, Chase is still one of the most
diverse and difficult to peg artists on the local scene. She's equally
confident and convincing whether stomping through a hard-rock workout
or crooning a languid country-flavored tune, her iron-strong voice adapting
to any extreme...."
